A Healthcare CEO/Manager
A healthcare manager just like any other CEO has the responsibility to generate important management decisions that can develop and sustain quality, efficiency and coherent teamwork in service delivery. For the purpose of this paper, I have identified an office manager of a physician at a primary care facility I know. In the next section, I discuss his leadership Characteristics.
The manager is a humble down to earth leader who listens to anyone, big or small, rich or poor, learned or illiterate. He is patient and persistent in character. He never rushes to make decisions or conclusions without considering the views of his colleagues. As if this is not enough, he sets high standards and endeavors to achieve them despite the challenges involved especially when search for collective decision is necessary. He has succeeded in his leadership because he is always keen to give attention to detail. He truly demonstrates understanding of the various healthcare functions and always ensures that they work together in harmony. The manager has interest in and values the views of the other workers which he incorporates in decision making regarding service delivery and improvement at the health facility. This has to a large extent helped integrate and strengthen relationship between the workers, a teamwork strategy that has propelled the facility to growth by fostering trust and confidence from their customers, (Stevens, 1999).
The manager has been able to lead the facility to growth and expansion even in times of economic depression. He understands how to balance costs and returns regarding healthcare service provision against returns on investment. Such are the vital analytical skills every manager needs in order to succeed in transforming an institution (Montgomery, 1991).
