The author of the article "behind barbed wire of California prisons" in L.A Times clearly brings out the fact that there are a lot of things that happen in Prisons that are unlawful or illegal especially the mistreatment of prisoners. The author has also made it clear that the media has been involved in letting the public know about what happens behind bars by interviewing prisoners face to face. This has brought a lot of hostility from the leaders in charge of the prisons and from Government. I do agree with the author that inmates are being mistreated in prisons or they don`t have basic needs like visitation or telephone. I also agree with the author that media involvement with prisoners is not a bad thing because it helps in championing the rights of the prisoners as they are still human beings.
Becoming a prisoner is often seen as a tragedy but to some people, it just happens out of their own will. They will go ahead and break the law knowing very well that the punishment awaiting them is a jail term as the concerned authorities try their best to correct the inmate`s behaviour. Regardless of the reason that make one to find themselves behind bars, the common fundamental rights that are limited include the freedom of movement, freedom of expression among others. This does not mean that they should be denied all rights. Rights of people should be respected at all times no matter where they are or who they are. The basic rights of prisoners should therefore be respected at all times even if some other privileges like freedom of movement are denied them. Eating good food, bathing, shaving, visitation and telephone calls are among some of the privileges that prisoners should be allowed
The most popular issue that continues to be debated is the fact that inmates have been denied the freedom of expression in terms of not being allowed to be interviewed or even airing their grievances. The United States is among some of the leading countries having a huge number of inmates. Sending somebody in jail is supposed to be in good faith since the jail should act as a correctional facility that should confine the individual before or after adjudication. It is sad that that these facilities which are supposed to act as correction facilities have been turned into torture holes. I agree that the inmates should be given an opportunity to speak their minds and also they should be offered a chance to speak to the world about their experiences in the correction facilities.
