Ethical usage of the Internet
Introduction
K-12 schools are required by the US to employ the use of filters to ensure that children are protected from harmful contents found in the internet. The enforcement of this requirement has been enshrined in the CIPA [Children`s Internet Protection Act], the constitutionality of the Act was approved by the Supreme Court in 2003 23rd June. The Bill had been signed to law previously on 21st December 2000. In 2003 the US Congress has also passed the Do Not Call Implementation Act whose main aim is ensure that consumers are protected telemarketers who usually make invasive to the consumers. Regulation of internet information for ethical consumption by people of all ages has been considered important because the right to privacy [as guaranteed by the US constitution] has got to be protected. Additionally, with many companies relying on internet marketing, the law has got to ensure that the companies do not abuse the privilege and feed the consumer with wrong information about products. Consumer protection is the main key by demanding that companies offer accurate information. Additionally the Acts help in ensuring that the groups accessing the information are legally accepted by the law to access such information. Additionally the Acts help to ensure that intellectual property is respected.

The Case of Miller v. California defines the term obscenity. This helps to understand the effects of advancement of technology especially towards minors. With advancement of technology, access to pornographic content has become easy, the sites do not have mechanisms to ensure that the users are purely adults; therefore the Act [18 U.S.C. 2256 defines child pornography in details] tries to ensure that children are not exposed to such materials. The internet has got harmful materials for minors. The Neighborhood Act (47 U.S.C. § 254(l) (2) as read with Sec. 1732 of CIPA defines harmful material to minors. CIPA defines material harmful to minors under Sec. 1711, 1712 and 172 to include materials that further nudity, excretion and sex, materials that are not suitable to children because of their tendency to promote stimulated or actual sexual contact or any other activities that promote sexual perverted acts. The prohibitions in the Act are as a result of advance in technology and it is appreciated that had the CIPA not been enacted, then, lack of ethics in the internet would have led to decay of morals for children.
