Introduction
The film picked for the analysis is titled as “The Color Purpose” dealing with the resistance of a poor African-American girl Celie against her norms. Franklin’s assertions in the “Ways to Wealth” stand true for the film. According to these assertions, the American dream is available for every hard worker who tends to avoid debt and works towards achieving a virtuous character (Franklin, 2007). Based on the insights gleaned from the movie, Franklin's assertions about the accessibility of the American dream is correct because Celie finds her way up to peace by working hard while simultaneously showing the spirit of self-reliance and virtue of her character.
Celie's Hard Work
Cielie stands apart for being committed to combat valiantly against injustice prevalent across her society. She had a hard time to recover from the trauma inflicted by her father by raping her at the age of 14 years. After forcibly getting married to Albert, her misery rises to the utmost level of intensity (Walker, 1992). However, she does not resort to the rejection of life and continues her struggle.
Her struggle to help disadvantaged women in her community win their rights is a significant aspect of her hard work. She zealously puts efforts to empower the black-American women that have been the victim of racial discrimination (Walker, 1992). Despite being mindful of her bitter past, she never loses faith and becomes a ray of hope for the community of neglected communities.
Her firm belief in God mostly boosts her motivation and courage. Following words offer a glimpse into her attachment with God:
“I'm poor, black, I may even be ugly, but dear God, I’m here! I’m here!" (Walker, 1992, p. 214).
This quote from Celie reveals that she is full of energy and willing to do what it may take to find her way through troubles. She has a firm belief in God which is predominantly at the bottom of her conviction.
The discussion in this section serves as approval for Franklin’s conception about the relationship between hard work and the American dream (Franklin, 2007). Celie rises from a depth where any ordinary girl might have found herself buried for good. Her hard work helps her defy the odds and secure a victory.
Celie's Avoidance of Debt
Even though there is no direct reference to debt, the idea of self-reliance as an undercurrent of the novel represents this assertion. Celie is a pure example of self-reliance. Throughout the film, she keeps her sufferings to herself and never vents her frustration to anyone else. She is burdened with the consciousness of getting rapped and, then, getting married to a pervert unwillingly (Walker, 1992; Johnson, 2011).
