Introduction
The discussion about the relation of faith and science in the event of healing a patient has been alive for quite a while. In the recent past, the debate has gained quite momentum with reference to the role that spirituality plays at the workplace, health care and other places. The historical debate relates to the fact that spirituality leans towards the ability of a patient in the case of medicine being healed due to their metaphysical experiences/faith in the religious ways, while the scientific part relates to the empiricism based on the scientific methods and research. The recent interest has been sparked by the fact that the debate about which of the method is the most effective has not helped the patients.
The scientific approach basis its knowledge on the observations made on the natural phenomenon, with hypothesis and theories formed and tested. Religion such as Christianity and Judaism, lead their congregations to believe that a person is more than their physical, emotional and cognitive elements. As such, most of the religious faiths believe that a person in whole is the combination of mind, body and soul. These are believes that are passed on through the generations. Majority of the western mainstream religions do not trample down the contribution of the scientific relevance in medicine but rather embrace it and the spiritual elements of wholeness and healing as well. While the scientific method allows for the use of certain therapies, such chemotherapy and physiotherapy among others, the spiritual aspect of healing applies rituals, holy oil, holy water, prayers and other traditions (James 5:14), all of which heal the physical, spiritual and mental health problems.
