Persepolis is a critically acclaimed memoir by Marjane Satrapi. Both its novel and the film versions are immensely intriguing, entertaining, and educative. They explore a myriad of themes like repression, religion, modernity, heroism, nationalism, martyrdom, justice, violence, forgiveness, war, gender, and politics. The 4-book graphic novel series tells her engaging and heartbreaking story of her childhood into adulthood in Iran from the late 1970s to the early 1980s during the Iranian Revolution and later in Europe. An award-winning movie has been produced based on the novel series. As is expected when a film is made based on a novel, there are several noticeable dissimilarities with the original regarding characterization, plot, and design elements. I prefer the novel version to the movie because it is more nuanced, and the film leaves out many scenes and chapters in the novel, making it less engaging.
The novel is more nuanced than its film version as it begins with an opening chapter in which Marji’s early life in 1980 is highlighted. In the chapter, she is portrayed as a young girl wearing her veil, which forms a good foundation from which Marji’s character and personality are well articulated throughout the novel creating a bond with the reader. In contrast, the film does not begin by highlighting her earlier life but begins with her adulthood. Additionally, the novel is a patches narration that distinctly tells her life story in selected events, while the movie is more of a flowing narrative.
