Scholarly referencing formats play a critical role in academic writing. Generally, a thorough knowledge and understanding of the rules that govern each of the formats is required (Labaree, 2013). This paper examines the importance of such scholarly formats as MLA and APA besides providing justifications as to why students ought to learn them.
Admittedly, writing styles enable a writer to better and logically organize his or her thoughts. Specific writing formats such as the MLA or APA provide a definite structure that the writer ought to follow when citing sources, including endnotes or footnotes, and inserting the bibliography. Additionally, scholarly formats also help reader to understand the material being communicated and to interpret cited sources. As such, use of scholarly formats in writing is of benefits to both the reader and the writer. It facilitates consistent organization and proper interpretation of the thoughts being communicated by the writer and the reader respectively, thereby guarding against distraction and misapprehension (Labaree, 2013).
Undoubtedly, students are required to learn at least one of the writing formats for a number of reasons. Firstly, the ability to effectively use scholarly formats helps students to attain a level of professionalism that reflects their academic maturity. The student learns to systematize his work as opposed to merely stuffing content on paper. Secondly, students also learn to transform their ideas from random thoughts to cohesive statements, thereby enabling them to score higher grades. Lastly, by mastering common scholarly formats, a student is able to generate writings with an unrivalled level of elegance (Ruszkiewicz, 2010).
