Health concerns associated with smoking cigarettes have been well documented for several decades. Some of the health risks increased by smoking include increasing the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, lung cancer, and stillbirth among pregnant women. Appropriate measures need to be taken to reduce these risks, including encouraging heavy smokers to reduce their average smoking and even quitting. Therefore, increasing the price of cigarettes is the right step to helping smokers to quit for their own good.
The use of ‘sin’ taxes is an appropriate strategy that helps smokers quit, thus minimizing the looming health risks. According to Bakalar (2017), an increase in the prices of a single pack of cigarettes by $1 increases the rates of quitting smoking by 20%. Further, this price increase minimizes the risk of heavy cigarette smoking by 7% in addition to reducing the average number of cigarettes smoked by heavy smokers by 35% (Bakalar, 2017).
