Global Climate Change Caused by Humans
Over the past few centuries, the Earth’s surface has undergone through its warming and cooling phases. Even during the old days, when humans are not yet around, it already has experienced a lot of climate changes. Accordingly, these changes have brought the Earth to a warmer state. In fact, the Union of Concerned Scientists [UCS] (2017), has recorded that every year, it becomes warmer, and that the year of 2016 has been documented as the warmest year in all of history.
Now, if we are going to scrutinize this issue, we may arrive at questions such as: “What causes climate change?” or “Where do all these global warming come from?” Evidently, if we are to look at the literatures that have been produced with regards to global warming and climate change, it would seem that researchers and scientists agree on one thing – that such is the product of human intervention, especially the greenhouse effect that emanates from the greenhouse gases (National Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA], 2017; National Geographic, 2017).
The greenhouse effect, as explained by the Department of Energy of Australia (n.d.), is “a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface; when the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases.” These greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The three most common from these gases, which significantly contributes to global warming are carbon dioxide, methane, and CFCs.
Carbon dioxide (CO2), as we all know, is a gas naturally released through respiration and volcanic eruptions. It must be noted, nonetheless, that it can also be a product of human activities like deforestation, burning fossil fuels, and land use changes (NASA, 2017). With regards to the natural processes, there is nothing we can do about it, of course, because respiration is a human activity that the body needs in order to continue existing whereas a volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon that no one has any control over. However, with regards to the human involvement, how do we control such if our evolving technology requires a lot of it? Nine out of 10 climate scientists agree to the fact that the main cause of global warming is actually the emission of carbon gases (NASA, 2017). It is actually regarded as the main greenhouse gas that is largely responsible for the entrapment of gas causing the warming of the Earth’s surface. Its concentration has dramatically up surged for the past decades and it continues to increase today and is expected to rise even more in the future (UCS, 2017). Therefore, if the emission of carbon dioxide gases caused by humans will continue to exist, global warming and climate change will continue to occur and eventually might just become much worse.
Methane, on the other hand, is a hydrocarbon gas, which like carbon dioxide, is both produced through natural processes and human activities. It is mainly used to decompose wastes in landfills and agri...
