Healing Hospital Paradigm
The treatment and management of a number of acute illnesses, such as cancer, demand holistic approaches employed to augment the traditional methods of hospital care (Do, 2009). For many years, hospital environment has been shown to significantly reduce disease burden and speed the healing process among patients suffering from such illnesses. Since many diseases have also been shown to respond to inexplicable autonomic nervous system regulation, there is need to explore and address a mechanism that exists between disease healing process and the environment. The hospital was built to help patients feel comfortable and safe and to remind the staff on their noble choice of working in the healthcare environment. According to Eberst (n.d), Mercy Gilbert Medical Center prides itself in not only being a healing facility, but also a place where a healing culture is strictly followed. The center has included three main components that qualify it to be called a healing hospital: physical design, work design and modern technology, and radical care, and loving culture (Eberst, n.d).
The center is aesthetically built to please the patients and the caregivers. Many healing environments are designed to help patients and their family members to cope with the kinds of stress associated with illnesses. The hospital architecture and design were made to afford comfort to the patients to include aesthetics and reduced ...
