Background: According to Erik Erikson, adolescence is a particularly turbulent time in life because of the struggle to establish a secure identity. Establishing a secure identity is the primary function of the ego. Identity is an inner sense of who we are, or what makes us unique, a sense of continuity over time and a feeling of wholeness.

PROMPT: For this assignment, I would like you to consider some of the things that teenagers do that might be interpreted as indicating a struggle to establish identity. Discuss at least 3 things that might be indicative of such a struggle and explain why this might represent a struggle to establish identity.

Many of the theorists like Erikson has regarded adolescent as one of the vital stages of development. The reason for this emphasis involves the lifelong impact of the things held in this stage on the life of an individual (Dimitrova, et al., 2018). These are the years of an adolescent’s life where he begins to form his own identity and that identity tends to evolve with him throughout his life. However, in the quest of identifying their identity adolescents face many struggles. Such as one of the major struggle adolescent face is that they try to establish their identity through prestige, such as working on their looks, trying different hairstyles, wearing right clothes (Schachter, 2018). All these are regarded as the symbol to affiliate themselves with a certain group. At this stage, if they are unable to overcome this struggle, probably in next stages they remain confused about which looks, style or things suits their personality.
Another struggle at this stage is that adolescents often try to maintain their identity as a mature individual so that they can be recognized and get acceptance. In this way, they tend to start engaging themselves in the activities that are associated with adulthood. Such as many adolescents get involved in pleasures like sex, drinking, smoking and drugs. Thus, this struggle leads to many of the harmful impacts on future life (Schachter, 2018). Another struggle that adolescents at this stage faces include, rebellion. It has been noticed that adolescents often are found to be rebellion towards teachers, parents, and rules. They are often seen to be in a struggle to obey by others (Becht, et al., 2017).
