The Effect an Individual's Actions Have On Other People
The effect of individual actions has over family and the society are well described in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Every character’s action in the play has a direct or indirect effect on another one. At the center of the action is John Proctor, a respected gentleman in Salem who closely guards his reputation. Proctors infidelity with his servant Abigail has come to haunt him. Abigail, the girl Proctor had an affair with, is still convinced that he loves him, and she takes advantage of witch hunting to win back Proctor. Her plan leads to many people being sentenced to death for involvement in witchcraft. Abigail frames Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife, of being a witch to avenge her ‘unfair’ treatment she was subjected to after she found out about her husband’s love affair with her (pg. 74). Proctor’s infidelity led to Abigail giving false testimony against his wife so that he could reignite the sparkle of a love affair she had with Proctor and possibly marry him. At the end of the play, Proctor regrets the situation he put himself into by having a love affair with Abigail and the suffering it brought on his family and other innocent people like his Mary Warren.
Abigail, a seventeen-year-old orphan, actions have led to the direct or indirect suffering of other people.
