In the mid 1970s the Temple headquarters moved to Sanfrancisco. His vision for the church was of a community where people lived and worked together for the common good and he wanted this outside the US. In 1975, due to defection of temple members and an impending newspaper article criticizing Jones, he found the opportunity to escape to Guyana where he established an agricultural settlement that would be known as Jonestown.
