Introduction
Love and Death in Ancient Greece is a well written article by Kenneth Cavander that explains the life of a woman who is caught in a detrimental love triangle. The article sets to prove that the amount of love shown to an individual does not limit them from betraying your trust. The article is set in ancient Athens, in an age where women had little to no rights and held not statue in the society.
Analysis
Inequality was predominant in ancient Greece as men had more authority and rights compared to women. The inequality did not stop Euphiletos from treating her wife with disrespect. Cavander explains that during this period, freely born women had nothing to call their own apart from their reputation. However, due to the love Euphiletos had for his wife, he worked hard to ensure that he provided for anything that his wife asked for. More so, because of the trust that Euphiletos had for his wife, he never questioned her movements. These acts by Euphiletos showed that he went against the norm to make sure that his wife was happy.
However, despite the efforts of her husband, Euphiletos’s wife made little effort to secure their marriage. As explained by Cavander, Euphiletos’s wife betrayed her husband’s trust by having an affair with another man. Euphiletos’s wife took advantage of her husband’s trust and went an extra mile to have an affair in her matrimonial home when her husband was upstairs sleeping.
More so, after the old slave woman met with Euphiletos and explained to him her wife’s affair with another man, Euphiletos refrained from confronting his wife before investigating. Cavander states that in such a circumstance,...
