Depression in the Elderly

Depression is a medical condition that affects the brain. Although depression is not a preserve of the old people only, many elderly people always suffer from the condition. There are many factors that contribute to depression among the elderly, making their prime years uncomfortable and full of anguish. Depression among older people is common, but not normal. This means that it is not mandatory for every elderly person to suffer from depression. This discussion looks at some of the causes of depression among the elderly and especially those who end up in nursing homes.
Various medical researches conducted in the past have not revealed a sole cause of depression among the elderly. Instead, depression among older people has been found to be caused by a myriad of causes. Some of the causes are hereditary, others are psychological and others are environmental (Runcan, 2015). It is a combination of all these factors that cause depression among the elderly people. Scientists have argued that pretty most of the cases of depression are genetically related. Most people inherit them from the family line and the genes may not manifest themselves until a very late stage in life. For those who inherit the genes of depression from the family line, any other traumatic experience such as the loss of a spouse or a loved one can easily trigger depression (Kennedy, 2015).
Another cause of depression in the elderly is a side effect of some of the medications taken (Hooker, 2016). Elderly people may suffer from some ailments and the medication taken may lead to depression. For instance, medication taken to treat hypertension among older people can easily cause depression. Drug abuse among the elderly, such as alcohol can also cause depression. If this is established to be the cause of depression, then it will be necessary for the practitioner to consider swapping medication that will not have any side-effects on the patient.
Between older men and women, the latter are at higher risk of suffering from depression than the former. This is caused by factors that are biological in nature, such as changes in hormones, which place women at a higher risk (Howard, 2016). From observation, it is also women who always bear the burden of taking care of a loved one when ill, disabled or maintain a relationship. The lack of support for all women who are unmarried, single mothers and even widows is another factor that is likely to lead to depression in the later stages of their lives.
There are several recommendations that have been aimed at improving this situation. Medical practitioners can undertake an examination that is physical in nature. It is through such an examination that it be established whether the patient is suffering from depression or not (Katona, 2014). Further, through such an examination, the medics can also establish the cause of the depression. It is only after diagnosis that proper treatment can be given. There are various forms of treatment available for elderly people suffering from depression. Therapy, medication or both can be used to treat the condition.
The majority of the elderly people who suffer from depression are those in nursing homes. The level of depression vari...
