Utilitarians claim that maximizing profits will promote the general welfare. This
is because our current economic system relies on the market. The market system requires widespread and intensive mass production, a vibrant money economy that thrives on exchange, competition, and high investments. These all require profit maximization if businesses are to thrive. If corporations go bankrupt, then the whole economy collapses and everyone will suffer.
