Racial Asymmetry
Racial Asymmetry is the inequality between people of different races. This inequality has resulted in the view that one race is superior to the other, as seen in white-dominated societies. This report examines some of the practical asymmetries derived from various groups of racial categorization as used in talk-in-interaction. The report particularly identifies the interactional environments where the white race is overtly treated as an invisible category in conversations and the mechanisms through which this overt placement of white race in the invisible category occurs. The mechanisms described demonstrating how ordinary interaction processes can expose and disturb the invisibility of race.
Reference to Relevant Studies
This study aimed to demonstrate the stereotypical or negative portrayal of people of color as opposed to the sympathetic depiction of white people using race talk. The race talk examined the lexis of racial discrimination and how such expressions relate to prejudice and inequality. Racist discourse, which is the study’s object, depends on the existence of the racial categorization of people as a resource. This existence shows how racism is used as a significant type of social classification in talk-in-interaction.
The study uses other works such as Wilkinson and Kitzinger’s (2003) research to examine this racial portrayal. Wilkinson and Kitzinger (2003) examined how race is organized by observing talks that invoke race incidentally (Whitehead & Lerner, 2009). Du Bois (2003), in his classic writings, described how black people are living in societies dominated by whites like the US experience negative portrayal by the majority members (Whitehead & Lerner, 2009).
