Racial Discrimination
Racial discrimination is a critical issue that negatively affects cross-cultural relationships and relationships between different countries. It changes people's perceptions of particular races in various societal settings. For instance, discrimination against African Americans makes people believe that a black person among white suspects in a case is more likely to get arrested and convicted due to the belief that African Americans are more disposed to criminal activities. The recent emergence of the coronavirus from China has also sparked a new mode of racism that is believed to be spreading faster than the virus. Some individuals are targeting people of Asian descent and accusing them of bringing the disease to foreign countries. There have been various cases where Asians have been verbally and physically attacked after the coronavirus outbreak. Discrimination is a critical event that has mostly been fueled by the media through biased reporting and other mistakes. Fox News and CNN are some of the leading media that have reported the issue in different tones.
The coronavirus has changed people's ways of life around the world, from lockdown of cities to closure of airports and borders. Similarly, people have become too cautious primarily by avoiding human contact to avert the disease. Games have also been affected since governments are banning social crowds where people could contract the deadly airborne disease. The seriousness of the virus had caused panic, changing people's views regarding Asians. Since the media is a powerful institution that is often used to propagate political propaganda and other news, it has also affected the way people think about the virus, its implications on their daily lives. Different media houses report differently, and some may get out of context and end up causing panic, not because they intended to do so but because they said the events in an unorthodox manner (Betz 2020). CNN and Fox News have published on the issue of coronavirus-fueled discrimination against Asians in different ways, with Fox news indicating more bias compared to CNN.
Fox News reports the issue of discrimination against Asians living abroad through a headline indicating a petition in California to expel a high school student accused of calling an Asian student 'coronavirus'. The news outlet talks about an online petition that calls for the expulsion of a student in California for yelling the term coronavirus to another student of Asian descent (Betz 2020). The headline seems too straightforward considering the sensitive nature of the issue, especially in American educational institutions. Although the petition is about bullying of Asian students, it may aggravate the situation by making other students with the same opinion as the accused to create hatred against Asians in their schools. Similarly, reporting the issue and pointing out the particular school in which the incidence occurred can cause panic in the school and make students feel as if their children may be at risk of contracting the virus in the school or becoming a victim of discrimination.
The incidence occurred in California's Bolsa Grande high school, w...
