Even though I have read various seminal essays over the years, Batholomae’s “Inventing the University” seminal essay has been outstanding. One of the main reasons was that I was relating to my writing for the class. One unique claim was the importance of college students learning to communicate with academic communities. He suggested that students learn this through “mimicking and assembling the language” within the scholarly world (Braunstein et al., 2016). He suggested that the only way the students will achieve this is by discovering distinctive ways that could help to “know, select, evaluate, report, have a conclusion, and argue” to help define the post-secondary community (Harris, 1989). As a student, I noticed the importance of understanding the scholarly world. For instance, before having this understanding, I struggled to research using primary sources since I did not understand which sources to use. However, I can conclude based on the informed process after understanding this world.
It is also outstanding how Batholomae has admitted that this process is difficult. For example, he has acknowledged that this process is usually for basic writers to assume that role, the voice, and the individual who has authority where their authority has been based on scholarship, analysis, or even research. For example, as a student, I experienced hardship trying to enter the academy. One of the reasons was that I did not have the enough understanding of the scholarly materials which sometimes made me to use the wrong information. Furthermore, I struggled to establish my ethos, considering that some of my target audience had more understanding than I had. Therefore, this forced me to start working within and again...
