Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a complicated disorder of the mind that is characterized by the inability to think in a logical manner, presence of abnormal responses to emotions, abnormal behavior in normal situations and the inability to differentiate real life situations. The article reviewed in this paper is by Pilling, et al. (2002) "Psychological treatments in schizophrenia: I. Meta-analysis of family intervention and cognitive behavior therapy" in the journal ‘Psychological Medicine`. The article focuses on four types of psychological interventions: family intervention, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), social skills training and cognitive remediation to establish the most effective treatment. The study identifies family intervention as most effective. The researchers apply literature review as a source of secondary data; in addition, primary data is collected from a meta-analysis on an identified sample.
Effects of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia increases the risk of the patient to commit suicide. Such patient should therefore be put under cross examination by a medical doctor or family members. People with Schizophrenia are prone to indulging themselves into drugs and they to do so in order suppress their symptoms. Schizophrenia can also affect the relationships of the patient. The patient may isolate himself/herself, thereby affecting his/her relationship with other people. The patient may also be noted as violent towards those people he/she is close to (Pilling, et al. 2002). Persons with Schizophrenia may not be able to perform their normal to normal operations in a sober way. The person may find it hard to maintain personal hygiene, and find it difficult to perform other ordinary chores.
Symptoms
The following are the symptoms of Schizophrenia which can be detected at an early stage: The patient may experience difficulties in sleeping.
