The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are movies that have a setting in the prison and they both portray the prison in different ways by the use of different characters. Both movies are adoptions of novels written by Stephen King. The movies also have a number of similarities in that both focus on the relationship between two characters where one is a black man and the other character is a white man. In Shawshank, the black man is a witness to the determination of the white man while in the Green Mile, the role of the black man is to absorb the pain of the whites and redeem and then forgive them. The difference in the characters in the film play a great role in shaping the plot of the film and developing a number of themes that make the viewers to be glued to their screens so that they can learn more on the development of the characters.
In the film, The Shawshank Redemption, we meet Andy Dufresne who is a young and ambitious banker in Portland convicted of murdering his wife and extramarital lover. When we first meet Andy, he is a cold, remorseless and detached person and one indeed begins to think that he committed the crime. Ellis Redding is also the main character in the film and at the first encounter, he remarks about Andy “how a still breeze would blow him over”. In Green Mile, the film has been told in the form of flashback of the memories of Paul who was a prison guard and he is now in a retirement home. We are also introduced to John Coffey who has been described by his lawyer as a “man dropped from the sky”. He has a unique character in that he appears to be simple minded and does not cause any trouble and he portrays the aspect of goodness in the entire film.
