Summary
The spiritual dimension of healthcare, care giving and healing have become popular in nursing and health practice. According to Griffin et al (2009), it is important for healthcare students and practitioners to become aware on the spiritual needs of patients for a more effective healing. This owes to the fact that the dimensions of spirituality and religion do affect the lives of many individuals (Joint Commission, 2005). This paper contains an assessment report of patient x, a 35-year-old man in California.
In general, the patient was found to be affiliated to the Christian religion. Spirituality was the most important aspect he considered in his life more than anything else was. He also argued that Christianity is what has made him the way he is since it teaches him to adhere to sound hygienic standards, avoid unnecessary and dangerous substances such as abuse of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and so on. According to him, God maintained his health and beliefs he will also heal him. In general, the patient was a strict Christian adherent who belonged to a Christian community. This patient however, was not expecting that a health practitioner should discuss matters relating to spirituality. Nonetheless, he suggested that the health practitioner while providing the care should respect his Christian values.
Discussion
The most notable discovery in this assessment was the patient’s inclination to spirituality and religiosity. The patient revealed this inclination in terms of regular church attendance, fellowships and ideological involvement. For instance, he says that his need is to be part of the church community instead of just being a member. This points to the reason why he involved himself in teaching Sunday school children. The patient mentioned God as the source of his comfort, healing and guidance. In addition, the patient said that it was his faith which gave him the emotional support and strength of coping with the illnesses, and that he believed that God would heal him soon. The patient was also noted to prayerful as he described it to be a crucial element for support, guidance and comfort.
Concerning the patient-physician relationship, the patient expected physicians to respect his spiritual values through their words and actions. He could also be comfortable in a healthcare environment that was based on mutual interest, trust and respect. Concerning spiritual discussions with physicians, the patient affirmed that he did not expect health practitioners to discuss spiritually related issues. Furthermore, revelation of personal beliefs by the physical could make the patient uncomfortable.
