The Mark of Zorro
John McCulley’sNovelThe Mark of Zorro is of historical context and is interesting to read. The author gracefully shifts between adventure, action and comedy. Everything about this novel is theatrical. The characters in this short story are primarily stock figures whose motivations are dictated by their social roles: the sergeant in the initial chapter is a boastful soldier, friars are devout and dedicated to the welfare of the Indians, and gentlemen are gallant. The setting of the Zorro stories in the novel is the small town of Reina de Los Angeles – Queen of the Angels – in Mexican California in the 1820s. The narrative follows the career of Don Diego Vega who appears as a foppish and effete aristocrat. Zorro was a gentleman who appeared during times of troubles wearing a black mask and a long purple cloak, and he fought with a pistol in one hand and a sword in the other. In this novel, Zorro assists a friar and a noble family whose property has been takenaway, and he then falls in love.Old California, during a period of extensive haciendas and arrogant caballer...
