Rutger Bregman suggests a simple approach to tackling poverty, giving the poor money (TED, 2017). According to Bregman, people are not poor because they lack the knowledge or intellect required to get them out of poverty. Instead, they are poor because they lack basic income. Basic income caters to food, shelter, and education. Given that governments can provide this basic income to the poor, Bregman suggests it should be considered a critical approach. Bregman provides the example of the United States (U.S.). Based on his estimates, it would cost the U.S. government $175 billion to provide a basic income guarantee to America's poor (TED, 2017). If the same principle was applied to countries throughout the world, poverty could be eliminated.
Comte found that the common notion of accumulating wealth and living the ideal life was not a feasible sociological model. Therefore, he sought to create a sociological theory that was practical for the world. By creating a far removed religion from what was universally accepted, Comte showed that departing from conventional thinking was instrumental in creating an ideal social system. In the same way, Bregman calls for the eradication of poverty by providing the poor with cash. This is not a concept that is popular in the world today, and especially in the west. However, it falls in line with Comte's views. As a positivist pioneer, Comte would also likely support Bregman's approach because it is based on statistics.
