Introduction
Traditional marketing systems state that a good product meets customers' needs, preferences, and expectations. In this case, video games should satisfy the most central users' preferences. Players create opinions based on their gameplay experience. Even with all the game components while playing, their main concern is their interaction with a virtual universe that responds to players' instructions. Other than gameplay, factors that make a good game are design and graphics, and the degree of the challenge. I agree with the annotation that “How a video game looks is not important. All that matters are the mechanics of gameplay” because mechanics are the game. How a game looks makes up its theme, and although they enhance the feel and create a more immersive experience, the ultimate core of the game is in its mechanics. This analysis uses first-person, battle royal, and RPG tabletop games to show that mechanics are more important than the theme.
Key Elements of Game Design
The play experience depends on the players’ decision to convey information. The interactive cycle continues as long as an individual communicates their commands into the system. The explicit interfaces that players manage relay several types of information (Fabricatore, 2007). This information can be divided into two categories: functional and aesthetic. Functional information instructions on what one should do to win the game. Aesthetic information seek to satisfy the players' interest by providing an environment that attracts their attention and emotions. They are the visual and contextual aspects that keep one rooted in the virtual world (Niedenthal, 2019). The key elements of game design are:
* The context of the game is an aesthetic component that comprises the story and the game's setting.
* Instructions and objectives that one must achieve to win.
* The game’s look and feel and its entertainment factor.
Focusing on Gameplay
Gameplay, graphics, and sound contribute to the overall experience of playing a video game. On the other hand, game mechanics are guidelines that improve and make the gaming experience enjoyable. The link between the two is the story of the game, one of the components of the theme (Lim et al., 2013). Many people say that the story is the heart of the game and that it comes first. However, the gameplay is significant among all games. Hit games are developed and based entirely on gameplay without a story. For example, Angry Birds, a hit game, does not follow a compelling story, but it has arguably outstanding gameplay. Moreover, one of the main features of a game is that it is interactive. The experience is different from that of a movie because games give players full control. If the device has a clunky control due to system lags, the gameplay will be horrible, leading to poor playability (Sánchez et al., 2012). Mechanics provide the player with clear control and effective feedback.
Mechanics as a tool for Gameplay
From a player's perspective, mechanics are proper tools for gameplay. According to the definition of gameplay, mechanics perform activities that result in interactivity by rece...
