Arthur Miller’s The Crucible focuses on witch hunts and trials during the 17th century Salem in colonial Massachusetts, and there is socially sanctioned violence against those accused of witchcraft. The article, Skater Nancy Kerrigan Attacked, focuses on Tonya Harding orchestrating an attack on Nancy Kerrigan, a rival for the U.S. Figure Skating Team. Kerrigan and Harding were due for Olympic trials, and Kerrigan was injured to miss the 1994 Olympics trials and selection after an attack causing her (HISTORY). Women in the play are jealous of fellow women if they want their men, and neighbors are jealous of those with good land and livestock. Abigail Williams, who worked for the Proctors, started witchcraft accusations because of jealousy, and over time more villagers targeted those they did not like. Thomas Putnam, one of the rich landowners, accuses others of witchcraft because he has many grievances with the villagers. Jealousy is one of the main themes in the play where the characters are resentful and greed against those they do not like.
