Career Exploration: Human Resources Writing Assignment

Essay Instructions:

Are you a "people person?" Professionals who work in Human Resources typically are. Even so, there are many different types of HR positions. There are people who manage benefits, and others who handle hiring and/or on-boarding new employees (helping new employees adjust to their new workplace). If you like working with data, there are people who work in HRIS - Human Resources Information Systems. They manage databases and generate reports that are used to make decisions or run the firm. There are jobs for compensation analysts. These people analyze jobs and compare them to similar positions in the industry to help determine appropriate salaries. There are HR people who manage and advocate for diversity and others who help to develop employees to make them as efficient and effective as possible.
Professionals who perform many of these roles are sometimes called "HR Generalists" or "HR Partners." These people are often assigned to work with one particular organization, department, or division. When there are problems with an employee or if there are disagreements among employees, these generalists will often work to correct the situation. In some cases, that can mean handling the firing of an employee.
Not Wild About Math?
HR careers do not typically require lots of math. If you are interested in a corporate career but you are not sure if you want to attend an AACSB accredited 4-year school where you will be required to pass calculus, HR might be a good career option.
