Since the 1700s, Marine Corps has been serving to protect its country from devastating attacks and wars. The marines have been in many wars like the American war, the Spanish American war, world war 1 and 2, and even the war against the British empire (U.S. Marine Corps, 2001). They have since been protecting borders from unexpected attacks that may harm even the civilians. The corps' duty to protect the country requires its marines and aspirants the right competence and attributes. It is for the marines to be able to carry on their sworn duties while keeping themselves safe to return home.
Marines are perceived to be physically tough especially by the civilians whom they serve and protect. It is because their primary responsibility is to be on the battlefield, prepared, and readily engaged despite the uncertainty of returning home alive (U.S. Marine Corps, 2001). Though, more than the physical strength, marine corps also prepare and train their units with their soft skills. One of the soft skills that are vital for the marines is communicating.
Communication
Marine Corps needs to succeed in the battlefield or in maintaining the peace because it is the safety of the whole country that is at stake. With this being said, they plan and strategize their every move so as not to harm anyone, as much as possible. In planning and strategizing, good communication saves people from unnecessary arguments and misunderstanding that could result to failure of plans. In any profession, communication is the key to harmonious negotiation. Understanding beyond words is point competency in communication (Carroll, n.d.).
Coaching
Carroll (n.d.) said that developing the observational skills and the ability to read body language is part of the process of personal growth of a marine. Observational skills and reading body language are part of communication skills. They provide necessary information without asking or talking. For instance, looking in the eye of the marine and responding to them with nods would send sign of attention to the speaker (Carroll, n.d.). It is important to pay attention to subordinates and units so that the coach will get to familiarize himself of the individual marines as well as to encourage them. Encouraging the marines is vital in coaching. It is setting up the mood for the marines to keep going whatever hardships come in the way.
