There are various communication styles that different people use to interact with each other. The first style is referred to as an assertive communication style. Assertive communication involves clearly and respectfully speaking up and standing for what one believes in without pushing ideas on other people (Gerhardt, 2019). Assertive communication is considered the most effective communication style because it allows people to clearly express their differences and compromise when needed. The second style is referred to as aggressive communication where a person forces their ideas and opinions on others by way of intimidation (Gerhardt, 2019). Thus, people who use this style of communication never compromise and are never willing to consider the needs of others. The third style of communication is referred to as passive communication. People who use passive communication usually fail to express their opinions or ideas and instead allow others to do so (Gerhardt, 2019). Those who use this style are usually unsure of their own needs or ideas.
These communication styles are applied differently in the workplace because they yield different results. Assertive communication is used in difficult situations when people are in disagreement because it allows people to mutually agree, thus balancing the needs of the involved parties (Schlachter, 2018). This style of communication is also applied when the involved parties still want to maintain or improve their relationship. Aggressive communication is applied in situations where work has to be done quickly and winning is a must, regardless of who disagrees with the decision (Schlachter, 2018).
