Employee Motivation
Today's workforce comprises five generations can make it challenging to motivate and reward them successfully. In this sense, a key factor that impacts motivation is the generation of the workforce. If the workplace is primarily made of generation X employees, the employer has to implement rewards that specifically motivate this generation. As Gurchiek (2016) noted, members of the different generations bring distinct attitudes, values, and behaviors to the workplace, and therefore, understanding the demographics of the workforce is critical to motivating each generation. Another factor that influences motivation is the level of engagement. According to SHRM (n.d.), disengaged employees do not feel a real connection with their jobs, and as a result, they only do the bare minimum. Therefore, when there is low engagement in a workplace, the motivation to work is bound to be severely impacted. Other key factors that impact motivation include leadership, compensation and benefits, work environment, and career development opportunities.
