The respect for human rights for all people regardless of their origin, sexual orientation, race, religion affiliation and nationality is still a pressing matter. Even as the Universal Declaration of human Rights (UDHR) was proclaimed in 1948, there are cases of human rights violations and blatant discrimination. As a world leader, I would make it easier for different territories to implement the human rights standards, and to achieve this would bring awareness on the issue. The more people understand the case for human rights, the more they are likely to accept human rights and democracy (Moores, 2012). Nonetheless, there is a need to balance the interests of various entities and avoid the abuse of any group, as this perpetuates injustice.
Strengthening the civil society groups is another priority to restore human rights, where there is willingness and strong enforcement of the human rights standards (Moores, 2012). Efforts to support enforcement measures ensure that the authorities charged with implementing the human rights standards are credible. This extends to the judiciary system, which is free from political influence and can uphold human rights. At the same time, the credibility of the judiciary is closely intertwined with the political process. An opened, participatory approach to governing allows political participation with the civil society groups to support the democratic process where there is respect for human rights.
Another global problem is global finance, as was highlighted by the global downturn in 2008/2009. The weakness of the financial system is still a problem, and the leaders ought to tackle global financial problems and improve the quality of life for all people.
