Topic: Evaluating Middle Childhood and Adolescent Thinking and Reasoning In this unit, you will learn about cognitive development in middle childhood and adolescence. The focus of this Discussion is on assessing Piaget’s ideas on the concrete operational child and the formal operational child. You will also explore the positive consequences of adolescent cognitive changes. Please respond to the following: Which aspects of Piaget’s description of the concrete operational child do you accept? Which aspects of Piaget’s description of the formal operational child do you accept? Which aspects do you doubt for each stage? Explain, citing research evidence. Adolescent cognitive changes are reflected in many aspects of adolescents’ everyday behavior, including self-concern, idealism, criticism, and faulty decision making (Berk, 2022). Berk Chapter 12: “Cognitive Development in Middle Childhood,” except Sections 12.3 “Individual Differences in Mental Development”, 12.4 "Language Development", 12.5.1 "Educational Philosophies", 12.5.2 "Teacher-Student Interactions" and 12.5.3 "Grouping Practices” Chapter 12 focuses on cognitive development in middle childhood. Piaget’s concrete operational stage is considered as is the Information Processing approach. Language development in middle childhood is discussed as is information on children’s learning in school. Individual differences in mental development are explored, by considering intelligence. Chapter 15: “Cognitive Development in Adolescence,” except Sections 15.7 “Vocational Development”, 15.4 "Sex Differences in Mental Abilities and 15.5 "Language Development" Chapter 15 covers cognitive development in adolescence, focusing on Piaget’s final stage (the formal operational stage) and the Information Processing approach. Adolescent cognitive changes are discussed. Language development, learning in school, and vocational development are explored.
