One of the disciplines that is both diverse and fascinating is environmental ethics. This concept investigates the moral relationship and status between humanity and the environment. Moreover, it tackles human-centeredness, deep ecology, social ecology and politics, and sustainability and climate change, among others (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2015). This paper analyzes the various perspectives on environmental ethics using environmental theories.
As a student, it is important to critically analyze theoretical perspectives since generally, this concept helps to reduce damages inflicted by the human race to the environment. In turn, the environment recognizes this protection by providing humans their necessities. Thus, from a personal perspective, it is essential to follow environmental ethics to prevent environmental abuses and to promote balance.
Many questions may arise from studying environmental ethics. They may be general or specific. However, the central idea of these questions pertains to the benefits of the environment from human integrity. Some of the issues include the following: 1) Is it morally incorrect to use a method that benefits humans and destroys the environment?; 2) Does human-restored ecologies have environmental significance over the natural ecology?; 3) Is it unacceptable to feed your family food using an environmentally-dangerous method? And if yes, what if the area where you are in does not have the means to make it safer for the environment, will you stop?
These questions are just some of the many concerns of environmental ethics. Frequently, it is not just a battle of what is right and wrong, but it is an innate conflict that lets people choose early survival over long periods of sustenance. Hence, from my perspective, it is truly unacceptable when human actions destroy the environment. However, when humans compensate for their actions with good intentions or proper counteractions, their actions will be justifiable.
The Influence of Human Behavior to Climate Change
Climate change is real, and the activities of humans are responsible for it. In 2017 alone, Canada recorded a burned area of 1.2 million hectares secondary to wildfires. As we all know, wildfires are natural phenomena that are secondary to increasing temperature. Moreover, other key factors include extreme weather conditions like extreme dry and warm conditions. Research has shown that currently, ninety-five percent of weather anomalies are secondary to anthropogenic factors. This factor directly influences forest fires in several regions in the world (Kirchmeier-Young et al., 2019).
The primary cause of global climate change is human activities that changed the atmospheric composition of the earth such as the widespread use of vehicles that emit carbon dioxide and the use of air-conditioning systems that are responsible for the increasing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Urbanization is another factor that has significantly contributed to climate change. Hence, human behavior must be modified to reduce the negative impact on the environment (Karl & Trenberth, 2003).
