Introduction
Sleep plays a critical physiological function for every living being including learning and memory function in students. It facilitates the memory consolidation process by providing the ideal conditions for active reorganization of representations. Sleep disorders have an adverse effect on students’ performance in class and their general health. A study by Hershner (2020) revealed that the consistency of sleep patterns has a significant effect on GPA scores of college students. The study also showed that sleep disturbances affected learners’ retention abilities and those with co-morbid sleep disorder were most at risk of academic failure. Gomes et al. (2011) confirmed these findings after testing for links between sleep patterns and various evaluations of academic success among undergraduate college students. They learnt that college students who consistently deprived themselves of sleep often underperformed when compared to learners who obtained enough sleep. Their findings not only showed lower academic performance among undergraduate students with poor sleep but also features of daytime functioning impairment which included feelings of depression, fatigue, and anxiety.
Gaultney (2010) also investigated the prevalence of sleep disorders among college students, and discovered that many learners in college were at risk of developing sleeping disorders because of poor sleep hygiene practices. Poor sleep hygiene practices were blamed for sleep deprivation and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) which impair learners’ memory and decision making abilities. The author also learnt that those at risk of developing sleeping disorders were also likely to fail in their studies. A majority of college students reported experiencing sleeping disorders, particularly sleep deprivation, which impair their memory and decision making abilities. Okanu et al. (2019) also arrived at the same conclusion after using wearable activity trackers to quantifiably and objectively measure the sleep quality, consistency, and duration of 100 college students. Their investigation discovered that students who had better sleep (in terms of quality, duration, and consistency) academically outperformed those who had poorer sleep. In fact, their findings revealed that sleep quality, duration, and consistency made up as much as a quarter of the gross variance in academic performance.
A study plan helps students to focus their thinking and learning efforts towards their academic goals. Yusuf (2018) discovered that a study plan helps drive regular engagement with learning. Personalized goal setting is useful in assisting students focus and continuously engage with their studies in a persistent manner. The author discovered a significant relationship between setting a personal study plan and situational motivation. A study plan helps students develop a strong mental focus towards their set goals and is helpful in eliminating the incongruent behaviors and interferences that prevent learners from achieving success in their studies. Overall, the study revealed that study planning considerably improved learner’s engagement with learning, resolution towards set academic goals, and aca...
