1 The principle of maleficence and beneficence posits that research in the field must not only take into account the immediate effects of the study (i.e., physical harm) but also its long-lasting effects. In the Stanford Prison Experiment, it was shown how the participants, acting as prisoners, have suffered emotional and psychological trauma on the part of the guards, despite all the debriefing processes that the researchers have done. To reduce these long-lasting effects, the researchers could have done regular treatments right after to remove the trauma that the experiment could have brought.
2 It was clear that the Zimbardo did not effectuate any considerable limits (except against physical violence) on what the participants acting a
3 s guards can do. Despite this, certain verbal and non-verbal abuse committed by the prison guards violates the ethical guideline on justice. Accordingly, Zimbardo could have also imposed narrower limitations on what the guards can and cannot say to the prisoners.
