Introduction to the Survey
According to Keith R. Leatham, a survey is conducted to collect qualitative or quantitative data relevant to a research project. Basically, surveys consist of a series of questions that may or may not be answered by the participants. A researcher carries out statistical surveys with an aim to make analytical interferences about a specific population; the accuracy of data depends on how many survey questions have been answered correctly and adequately. In most of the scientific experiments, quantitative factors are given more preference than qualitative factors. Examples of quantitative factors are weight, age and time, and examples of qualitative factors are color, name, and class. During their surveys, experts intend to ask quantifiable questions from the respondents to be assured of the accuracy and legitimacy of the data. The key to success is designing survey questions as per the mental capabilities of the respondents while taking care of the research variables. Two basic types of variables are dependent variables and independent variables, and both of these can be used to conduct a survey (Leatham, 2012).
Examples of Variables that could be measured with a Survey

Let us assume that you have recently established a cafeteria or tea point. The dependent variable in this situation will be temperature, and the independent variable will be time. You can conduct a survey and encourage the guests to leave their feedback regarding the quality of food and services. In this situation, it will be easy for you to determine whether some improvements are needed to ensure the growth and success of your business or not (Toussaint, et al., 2009).

In the fields of social science, geography, and biology, isolating independent variables is more complicated than dependent variables. For instance, in a biological class, you may want to determine how the students react to the announcement of a surprise test. Are they ready for it given that they were told that a surprise test would be held anytime during the week? In this situation, a survey would lead you to postulate that most of the students do not like the idea of a surprise test that because they are overwhelmed with projects. You may or may not create a hypothesis based on that, and can conduct a small-sized research project if substantial evidence is available. The reactions of students will be regarded as independent variables, and the classroom environment will be regarded as a dependent variable (Thompson & Thompson, 2016).
