6-1: Helena starts by noting that early personal experiences usually play a big role in influencing both positive and negative ethnic identity in persons of color. Persons of color are often racial conscious and do possess a high level of ethnic identity development. Normally, physical characteristics such as hair texture, skin color and facial features are used by individuals to understand the ethnic groups that they come from and therefore know which groups they can identify with. Ethnic identity is psychologically important to ethnic minority groups since it helps them pool together in times of discrimination (Turner, n.d., p. 523). In such times, ethnic identity provides self-acceptance, strength and competence at an early age. Usually, socialization among people of color begins at birth and it is this early perception that helps the individuals acquire customs, values, behavior codes, and language styles between a child, family and community at large.
6-1: Angela gives an example of a Japanese woman who is negatively impacted upon by her own personal experiences from an early age. From the onset, the Japanese-American woman has a distorted view of her Japanese culture; she only recognizes the American culture as the gold standard and looks down on her own culture (Skowron, 2004). It is until she meets her Japanese colleagues at the University of California that the woman starts accepting her Japanese heritage.
6-1: Jessica mentions that early experiences of racism on children can have deleterious effects and set the tone for the rest of their lives and even how they relate with other ethnic groups. Resentment can develop in children who have experienced negative influences about the color of their skin as well as themselves. In contrast, children who have early positive experiences have high esteem and even high success rates in school and careers. Jessica provides an excellent source (Pachter & Coll, 2009, para. 5) and gives an example of how racial and ethnic disparities have been noted in rates of caesarean delivery, access to renal transplantation, obesity, cancer survival rates as well as in physician prescribing patterns.
