Allegory of the Cave is one of the most famous philosophical literatures. The book contrasts the reality with the human perception of the physical world. Plato talks about a cave to symbolically mean an enclosure, which prevents people from visualizing the reality of the world. This essay contrasts the prisoners in Plato’s allegory of the cave with the 21st century men and women watching huge flat screen TVs. This paper delves into exploring the parallelism between the characters in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and real life today; particularly, this essay seeks to bring out how people perceive what they watch on their flat screen TV’s today and how the situation is presented in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Plato talks about a fictional story of cave dwellers who are so accustomed to the cave that they are not aware of what happens outside the cave. They are not aware that there exist a world and universe above the cave. Everything in the cave looks normal. The people in the cave cannot discern well the images and pictures because of the dimly lit inside environment. However, they believe that whatever they see is real. A number of things happen that prompt them to move out of the cave. But they believe that those are merely objects and, therefore, pay little attention to them because they lack the clue of what the shadows are. The life in the cave, therefore, consists of watching shadows. The cave dwellers are entertained and informed by their reality; with no knowledge that these are merely artificial constraints.
