Thank you for the informative post, professionals find it difficult to distinguish the symptoms related to mental illness and personality disorder. Several factors shape our personality including childhood traumas, experiences and substance abuse; this explains why the 13 personality disorders are grouped into three clusters. It is important to assess one's history of substance abuse because substance abuse alters individual personality (Akiskal, 2016).
Kara Hill
I support the fact that symptoms of personality disorders and other mental illnesses can overlap. Some of the personality disorders like Borderline Personality Disorder present similar symptoms like certain mental illnesses including depression and anxiety. However, personality disorders are the disparity of individual inner experiences caused by either impairment or stressful situation and behaviors based on cultural expectations (Cloninger & Svrakic, 2016). The difference between personality disorders and mental illness is the behavior and the criteria for categorizing both disorders (American Psychological Association, 2013).

I agree that personality disorder is the differences of individual inner experience and behaviors based on cultural expectations (Cloninger & Svrakic, 2016). Individuals suffering from personality disorder display erratic behavior meaning that they display exaggerated behavior not moods or feelings. The difference between personality disorder and mental illness are the duration; personality disorder is ongoing while mental illnesses occur within specific periods (American Psychological Association, 2013).
