Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children is a catholic charity establishment that provides services to over 1,000 women and children in the Los Angeles area in California. The center was established in 1984 with a 30 bed shelter under the care of Sister Julia Mary Farley who was given the mandate of leading the program CITATION Goo15 \l 1033 (Good Shepherd Center, 2015). However, back in the day the shelter was meant to be a drop in center for women who were living in the streets. In the next eight years following its establishment, Good Shepherd expanded to include children its services as well providing transitional residence serving and also added a mobile program that provides food, shelter and hope to women who were living in the streets. Today, Good Shepherd Shelter provides home to over 1,000 women or 45 children and 93 women every night. It also provides a home to women who have either been divorced, lost their job or homes. The center seeks to assist women get on their feet by providing them with the necessary tools to become self-sufficient. For example, the center has a café and a bakery which provides the residents with training in the culinary arts. The non-profit organization is run a number of directors who are dedicated to transforming the lives of women at the center. Currently, Sister Anne Tran is the center Director she is a registered nurse and has a master’s degree in Social Work. Victor Hinderliter is the Associate Director and is in charge of all the programs in the center. Finally, there is Adriana Sandoval who is the head of development and is in charge of all fundraising strategies. Good Shepherd depends on donations from the community and also relies on volunteers who work contribute their time and effort to the center CITATION Goo151 \l 1033 (Good Shepherd Shelter, 2015). In this essay, the author will delve into the subject of who the organization serves, how the organization works to contest the consequences of inequality in the Los Angeles area and whether the population served is involved in leadership and decision making in the organization.
Good Shepherd center’s mission is to empower homeless women and children by providing them with housing, support services and employment so that they can become self-sufficient. The goal of the center include breaking the cycle of poverty by helping women to become independent and also provide assistance to women who are disabled and have children who depend on them. Good Shepherd center provides assistance to women and children from diverse backgrounds, religions and races as it provides home to over 1,000 women and children each year. The center usually specializes in providing service and homes to women and children who have come from different backgrounds. Most of the women who have been taken in at the center usually have had a history of domestic violence, have experienced some unexpected challenges such as losing their job, having some health issues or being divorced or other situations which could have rendered them homeless.
