Using the evaluative criteria described in the assigned reading for Module 2 (see "Evaluating Web Pages: Questions to Ask and Strategies for Getting the Answers," http://www(dot)lib(dot)berkeley(dot)edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html), write a 500-word essay describing what indications of accuracy, validity, verifiability, authority, and recency you found in each of your search results. Accuracy, reliability, and authenticity of web information can be evaluated in a number of ways. The web has a lot of information owing to the large number of authors, websites, and web pages. It is prudent to make measures to check on accuracy, reliability, and quality of information from the internet. This paper aims at providing an analysis on the provision of different results by databases and search engines in terms of accuracy, authority, and verifiability of information.
Authority- verification of information obtained through a search engine is impossible owing to inability to regulate information on the internet to ensure there are only professionally reviewed journals or articles. Databases ensure information provided has been peer reviewed and only post scholarly articles, hence their authority can be determined as demonstrated by the EBSCO database (Katz, 2013).
Accuracy- accuracy of information from search engines is not guaranteed as any person with internet connectivity can upload any information. This differs with information on databases that have to be published and peer reviewed, hence are accurate. The ability to verify information obtained through search engines is not possible as information on the author, qualifications and expertise on the given topic is not available. This, however, is not the case in databases where information on author, expertise, and qualification is provided increasing the accuracy and authenticity of information on databases.
