First Impressions of Sociology in the Age of the COVID 19 Pandemic

Essay Instructions:

A blog is like a journal designed to share information about some subject for a general audience. In this class, you will be generating and discussing two informed blogs about Sociological topics (I will provide the subjects/prompts). For your first post, I'm going to give you a little more structure and ask you to organize your first blog post around the following two prompts:
INCLUDE BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS IN ONE MAIN BLOG POST
1. Argue Sociologically. After learning about the Sociological Imagination (Lesson 1), I would like you to compose one or two large essay-style paragraphs reflecting Sociologically on the coronavirus. Attend to the following in your work:
Using your own words, briefly describe the Sociological Imagination and how it helps us distinguish between personal troubles and social problems.
Explain how the coronavirus is being treated in your society (e.g., the U.S.). That is, make an argument whether the coronavirus is being treated as a personal trouble (i.e., applying the individualist perspective), or, a social problem (i.e., applying the Sociological Imagination). Defend your position using evidence from an external resource along with what you learned about the Sociological Imagination (e.g., think about framing, blame, policies, stigmas, etc.).
You must use one outside scholarly resource here. Click here to read about credible outside sources.
NOTE: Your work must substantively differ from the examples given in my lecture and the textbook! So if you use examples I gave, I will be unable to grade your work!
2. Analyze Theoretically. After learning about Sociological theories and research methods (Lesson 2-3) please construct one or two large essay-style paragraphs theoretically analyzing the coronavirus. Attend to the following in your work:
Scientists apply theories to social issues. Theories guide how social scientists both study social issues and envision change occurring around them in society. Using the the theory assigned to your last name listed below, tell us how you would apply it to the current coronavirus situation. You should consider how your theoretical orientation would define the role of the coronavirus, how it would study the coronavirus in society, and how it would suggest what change needs to happen (if any). Excellent responses will include discussions of strengths and weaknesses to using this theoretical approach.
- *You are a functionalist theorist.*
You must use and cite at least one outside scholarly source to support your work here.
You may use any citation method (ASA/APA is preferred) but parenthetical citation with a reference list at the end of your paper is required.

A lot of individuals claim to understand the environment and all the events taking place in it yet they do not understand the social aspect of the world. Luckily, sociological imagination provides a framework that we can use to understand the connection between the wider society and personal problems. Personal problems are experienced within the character of the person and their impact depends on the range of a person’s immediate relationship with others. In contrast, social issues are rooted in society and are beyond the control of individuals. The majority of personal problems are not utterly personal because they are influenced by social expectations and habits. As a result, the real significance of sociological imagination is found in how people connect personal problems to social issues rather than distinguish them. For example, purchasing university/college textbooks and other course materials is very expensive. Some students may see this as a personal problem but they are part of the increasing number of learners who are required to make monetary decisions based on social circumstances. Additional, homelessness may be attributed to personal choices such as laziness or lack of motivation. However, lack of motivation and laziness originate from numerous social obstacles such as bad schools and high unemployment rate.
Trying to identify whether COVID-19 is a personal or social problem when people are dying is unfortunate. However, based on the impact that the virus has had since its emergence in Wuhan, it meets the standards of being recognized as a social problem. Social problems or issues usually develop faster because they are beyond the control of individuals. At the time of writing this blog, more than 5.5 million people have been infected by the virus while 349, 894 have died globally. In the United States, more than 1.6 million have been infected while the number of deaths is almost reaching 100, 000. Other than the growing number of deaths, the covid-19 has exposed numerous disparities that exist in our society. The concept of social imagination implies that personal problems of the poor and the vulnerable tend to be influenced more by social problems than other groups. According to the United Nations (2020), the health and financial effects of the coronavirus are mostly borne by poor individuals across the world. For instance, refugees and other homeless people are highly exposed to t...
