1. In 1660, fur trading began with the first fur cargo delivered to Montreal by Pierre Esprit and Medard Chouart. The competition from fur companies hastened the exploitation of Lake Superior region as more Europeans arrived.
2. Two Jesuit missionaries visited the falls between Huron and Superior in 1641 and gave the area a new name; Sault de Ste. Marie. As a result, the first reference to the lake as “Superiur” was published in 1647.
3. In 1855, completion of Soo Locks linked Lake Superior navigation to the world. This transformed the region around the lake into a commercial hub as copper, iron and zinc were easily transported to far regions.
4. On November 9, 1913, Lake Huron was hit by the worst storm ever to hit the Great Lakes. The storm which was called “The Big Blow” raged for 16 hours, killed 235 people, and sunk 10 ships.
