A lingering trajectory of dying is where a person experiences a slow process of life fading. A lingering trajectory in death is typical of long-term, terminally ill people (such as people with cancer and heart problems). This type of trajectory is a common observation in nursing homes providing palliative care for the terminally ill patients. In this scenario, aggressive treatment options are not sought. Instead, the patients are provided with the comfort to help ease their suffering. The advantage of lingering trajectory in death is that it awards the patient and the family time to prepare for the death. The main disadvantage is that the patient is not physically dead, but they are absent from their social lives and thus they are not socially dead.
