The Purnell model is one of the frequently used assessment tools for nurses in the provision of cultural competent care. The model is a combination of various theories, depicted using a circle where the outside rim is the global society; the next rim is a community, the third is the family, the inner represent the person, with the interior containing 12 wedges that depict cultural domains. The third domain of the interior represents the family roles & organization. The Purnell model can depict the cultural views of the Zulu and American culture on family roles and organization
The Zulu structure is a patriarchal society, and although the American culture is not matriarchal, the family roles are less defined than in Zulu culture. The main difference is that polygamy is an expected way of life among the Zulu, and the first wife exerts strong influence on the family (Gleimius., 2003). On the other hand, the typical American marriage is monogamous, and bigamy is frowned upon by the society and outlawed. Traditionally, the first Zulu wife helped the husband to get other women, as subsequent wives would help out in the household (Gleimius et al., 2003). Even though, the practice is practiced less often among the Zulus, the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma who is a Zulu is polygamous, and this shows that the practice does not affect one’s social standing.
