In the contemporary society, unlike the traditional times, attitudes towards sexual affiliation remain a widespread concern, particularly in the United States. These attitudes though liberating hold that matters with sexual orientation are all about choice. Little is known about the magnitude in which individuals exhibit forms of prejudice towards lesbian and gay relationships.
Introduction
This paper endeavors to examine and distinguish the outcomes of surveys that depict the magnitudes of prejudice in the United States. In the 20th century, apart from being condemned as a sin and prosecuted in the courts of law as a crime, self-identified lesbians, gay, and bisexuals have been assumed by many mental health professionals to be ill. These assumptions according to sources were never based on legitimate scientific studies, a factor that stigmatized this population who in many instances were required to seek a cure for their conditions (Breiding, Smith, Basile, Walters, & Merrick, 2014). Some of this people were forced into treatment facilities with those who resisted arrested and hospitalized. Psychologists and psychiatrists derived several approaches to curing this malady that ranged from hormonal injections, electro-shocking, talk therapies, castrations among other methods.
Comparison and Contrasts
Several emphases have been enacted on the relevance of the law and public policies on sexual prejudice in the United States. Compared with the adult population in the United States, respondents to these prejudices have been reported to be younger, and highly educated, with the differences observed along the margins of gender and sexual orientation. In overall terms, it has been discovered that the respondents to this forms of prejudices tend to be inclined to the liberal form of politics, and are perceived to be less of religious who support the ideals of equality in same-sex couples (Breiding, et.al). According to the National Survey data, women were more likely to be in committed relationships than the male counterparts.
Practically, all the coupled lesbian and gay men had the same-sex partners, as compared to the majority of coupled bisexuals who were mainly in heterosexual relationships. Compared with bisexuals, the gays and lesbian are reported to have stronger commitments to a sexual minority identity, extensive disclosure of their sexual orientation to other people, and greater community involvement and identification.
