GMO’s or Genetically Modified Crops are crops who underwent the process of genetic cloning. The proponents of GMO’s are saying that GMO’s can be produced in more quantities and will thereby solve world hunger. They are also arguing that since it can be produce more in smaller land, there would be less deforestation and therefore slows global warming. More production would also mean the prices of GMO food would be cheaper which means the reduction of poverty worldwide. Scientists who are into GMO’s are also saying that they employ rigorous tests so that GMO’s are safer than the organic traditional crops. They are also saying that they can produce more nutritious GMO crops. Because of genetic engineering, corporations can now produce new products such as growing decaffeinated coffee in the natural way and others. The use of pesticides would be lesser as they can produce crops that are resistant to pests. Consequently they would argue that there would be less pollution due to the decrease of pesticide use.
Proponents are saying that GMO’s undergo strict tests and they are not permitted to enter into the market without passing strict standards. Those who are against GMO’s argue of the following disadvantages. The corporations who have invested in GMO’s created more poverty and hunger among the farmers. The monopolization of agriculture led to the bankruptcy of traditional farmers and local producers. Cheaper prices would mean higher profits for corporations and spell starvation to many farmers due to cutthroat competition. The claim that GMO’s are safer only tested the product itself and not the impact of the production process that did not factor in the spread of more resistant super pests.
