The Rise and Future Demise of the World Capitalist System: Concepts for Comparative Analysis

In this classic paper on the World System Theory by Immanuel Wallerstein, the author argues that we should analyze society by taking into consideration the whole of society as the fundamental starting point. He argues that there is only one world system and this is the capitalist world system. The other existing economic systems such as socialist, feudal, subsistence are subsumed under the force of the capitalist world system. He criticized wrong applications of Marxism which eventually turns ahistorical and stagists and neglects to analyze the totality of the social process. He argues that there already exists a world capitalist division of labour which is the defining characteristic of any social system. Thus it does not necessitate a global political set up nor a common culture to have a global economy. He argues that mini-economic systems no longer exist in the world today since all systems in the world are now defined by a global capitalist division of labour. Thus even so-called socialist countries are held sway by the dominant capitalist mode of production.
You Just Don't Understand: Troubled Engagements between Feminists and IR Theorists
Author(s): J. Ann Tickner

This article analyzes how feminist framework and discourse have encountered difficulties in communicating with the mainstream International Relations scholars. This is because IR scholars who use conventional approaches are relatively unfamiliar with feminist ontologies and epistemologies. IR scholars use conventional state centric and structural approaches which have little or no space for feminist discourses while they see the need to incorporate feminism into the mainstream. There is also the important factor of power differentials that come into play. Power differentials tend to make feminists more suspicious and IR scholars to be more intellectually arrogant and closed minded. In the end, feminists resort to silence instead of pursuing their perspectives more constructively. This results in misunderstandings, avoidance, and poor communication. This study analyzes the normative dynamics to be able to suggest ways and means for better discourse. By reflecting deeply on the conversations, this article creates a space where genuine exchange and dialogue can be creatively done. The author suggests ways in which feminists perspectives can be incorporated into important IR topics such special in the topic of security. This article can be helpful for feminists engaged in IR work to pursue their engagements constructively.
