Description of the tutorial: Networking

Essay Instructions:

You'll recall that for the SLP assignment for this course, we are conducting assessments of networking tutorials.

SLP Assignment Expectations

For Module 2, your assignment is to work through two interactive demos. The first is on Network Routing; it found at http://www(dot)laughton(dot)com/obrien/foothill/001/cis001_applets/APPLETS/TCPIP/applet_frame.htm. The second is on Reliable Connections; it’s found at http://www(dot)laughton(dot)com/obrien/foothill/001/cis001_applets/APPLETS/NETWORK/applet_frame.htm.

In order to shore up your awareness of technical terms, you may want to consult the E-tutes tutorial on routing [http://www(dot)e-tutes(dot)com/lesson7/networking_fundamentals_lesson7_1.htm]. You don’t need to work through this whole tutorial, but it’s a good briefing on basic routing terminology.

The more of the tutorial you can work through, the better; however, your grade is primarily dependent on how you approach the task and how much learning energy you put into it rather than specific output from the tutorial.

Once you have completed your exploration of the tutorials, to finish the project for this module you are to prepare a 2-3 page report covering the following topics:

  • A brief description of the tutorial and what it teaches.
  • Key new language learned, including major technical terms; please provide brief definitions for these, and indicate why they are important..
  • Any areas of uncertainty left by the tutorial; does it leave you believing that you need to know more about some topics?
  • Your evaluation of and experiences with the tutorial as you checked it out.

Your paper will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Precision: You carried out the exercise as assigned, including all the elements of a good review as described above, or carefully explained the limitations that might have prevented your completing some parts (running out of time isn’t generally considered an adequate limitation).
  • Clarity: Your answers are clear and show your good understanding of the topic.
  • Breadth and Depth: The scope covered in your paper is directly related to the questions of the assignment and the learning objectives of the module.
  • Critical thinking: The paper incorporates YOUR reactions, examples, and applications of the material to business that illustrate your reflective judgment and good understanding of the concepts.
  • Overall quality: Your paper is well written and the references, where needed, are properly cited and listed (refer to the university guidelines (http://support(dot)trident(dot)edu/files/Well-Written-Paper.pdf) if you are uncertain about formats or other issues.

Networking
Description of the tutorial: the tutorial is basically about network routing and it teaches about how data packet is routed from its source to its destination via routers, as well as across several networks. The Internet Protocol (IP) routing protocols allow routers to create a forwarding table which correlates next hop addresses with the final destinations. The tutorial has demonstrated how packets are routed in various networks including chain, ring, star and complex networks.
New language learned: the new language learned include chain, ring, star and complex networks. (i) Chain Network: a daisy chain network is simply the easiest way of adding extra computers into a network. This type of network is where each computer is connected in a series to the next workstation. When a packet of data is intended for a computer unit down the line, every computer will bounce it along sequentially until the packet gets to the final computer; its destination (Mitchell, 2011). (ii) Ring Network: this a type of network developed in a rounded, spherical fashion where data moves around the ring in a single direction and every computer on that ring serves as a repeater in order to keep the signal strong as it moves. In essence, as the computers are all linked to each other in a circle, the data travels from one computer to the subsequent computer, and all the way around the ring network layout again until it gets to the destination, final computer (Mitchell, 2011). Ring network is important given that data transmission is rather simple since it only moves in a single direction.
(iii) Star Network: this is essentially a local area network (LAN) where every n...
