Many literary devices have been employed by authors to capture the attention of viewers and readers, one of such devices is foreshadowing. In foreshadowing, a writer hints at what is to come later in the story, in most cases foreshadowing comes in the early chapters of a book or early scenes of a movie. Writers can create foreshadowing through dreams, actual dialogue and other actions in a chapter or a scene. In the movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption' directed by Darabont, foreshadowing is one of the literary devices that has been used. In the movie, a ‘dream’ has been used to predict what happens later in the movie. Andy Dufresne tells Red a dream that is unlikely to be a reality. In Andy’s mind, he hopes of living in a small town in Mexico, something Red believes is impossible. Instead, Red tells him that whatever he was saying wasw a shitty pipe dream; this was to predict Andy’s escape through the sewer line. In Red's mind, the walls of the prison enclosing the inmates were also to control the thoughts of the inmates; which means the inmates were only to think of their situation in the jail. Andy is later seen making escape plans which to most people was a surprise move. Andy succeeds in his mission and finally fulfills his dream of living in a small city in Mexico.
